Jiggers Treatment Campaign

The out reach work takes us to some very remote villages, seeking out those who need help. When we get there, the work involves treating some very bad cases as well as education on how to prevent the pestilence. It may not be the most pleasant of jobs but this guy was unable to walk, so it really is life changing.

Some of the worst cases we encounter during our House to house Jiggers treatment campaign, you can imagine the guy in the first photo was unable to even sit properly.

Jiggers is a debilitating disease that is caused by the Chigoe flea. This flea lives on animals and in the dry dust on the ground and in the walls of huts. It is a tiny flea that burrows into the skin of hands or feet, where it then lays its eggs.
These eggs and their egg sacks grow and cause the host immense discomfort and renders them immobile.

Children are unable to go to school and adults are unable to work and so livelihoods are lost. These people are also stigmatised because Jiggers infestation is linked with cleanliness.

In some cases, Jiggers can lead to secondary diseases such as gangrene and can become fatal. If the hands are infected, the eggs can be ingested and cause death.

The treatment is not difficult but those infected are unable to walk and therefore need our outreach work to cure them.

First the feet or hands are disinfected, then the eggs are suffocated by smearing the affected area with petroleum jelly. They then die, the dead skin will just peel off leaving healthy tissue underneath.

We then spray the homes and teach the importance of house cleaning in order to sweep away the build-up of dust. We will also treat existing and supply rubber shoes to prevent re-infestation.

Donations are used to buy the necessary treatment compounds and transportation. We currently use mountain bikes but we need more. The demand for our services is growing very rapidly and beyond the range of bikes.

This guy was unable to sleep due to the pain of his Jiggers. He was unable to walk so he had completely lost his livelihood and was considered untouchable by his neighbours.

His feet were cured within two weeks and only a few weeks ago, we found out that he is now married.

Our treatment really is lifechanging.
